The story focuses on a little boy who has been told by his friends that there is no Santa Claus. Unwilling to believe this, he lies awake in his bed on Christmas Eve, waiting for the sound of Santa’s sleigh. Instead, he hears the hissing steam and squeaking metal of the Polar Express as it stops outside his window, ready to take him and other children to the North Pole. Aboard the train, chefs serve cocoa "as thick and rich as melted chocolate bars" and "candy with nougat centers as white as snow." A sea of elves greets the Polar Express passengers at the North Pole and the boy is chosen by Santa to receive the "first gift of Christmas."

He asks simply for a bell from a reindeer’s harness. Heading home on the train, he sadly realizes that he has lost the bell through a hole in his bathrobe. On Christmas morning, though, he finds a small package tucked under the tree. It’s the bell with a note from Santa telling him to mend that hole! The boy and his sister can hear the beautiful ring of the bell, but his parents cannot. Only those who believe can hear the sound of Santa’s sleigh bell.

The Polar Express Event is the major fundraiser for the "Believe in Books" Literacy Foundation.
